WCMS provides only users ability to manage documents and content for websites which may include text and embed graphics, photos, video, audio, maps and program code to display.

CMS use to display content and interaction with the user and output for multiple author editing and participation. Most systems use a content repository  or a database to store page content, metadata, and other information of assets that are used by system needs.

The major difference between AEM and other management system is that it can integrate with other products of adobe with single user interface available in Adobe marketing cloud.AEM comes with inbuilt workflow system that can control content with in the system and also can interact with users, accounts and assets. 

What is the difference between the Author and Publish instance ?

In AEM It usually has two different instances which may run on same or diffrent environments. Author and Publisher both instances are usually kept in two different settings and can have multiple Instance for different users.For example different users can use multiple instances  to parallely work on Author as well as Publisher.The Author instance is where you will enter and manage content for your website and administer your site as well. The Author instance is usually kept behind a firewall. The Publisher instance is where you will make your content available for your targeted audience. The publish environment is usually kept in a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
